#251: Express Scripts

One of the few lastly-placed cakes was put at Express Scripts, one of St. Louis' most successful corporations who proudly makes their home here. The headquarters is located directly across from UMSL.

• As of 2013, it is a Fortune 100 company, ranking 20th as the biggest revenue generator. 
• It is the largest pharmacy benefit management company in the U.S.
• The company was founded in St. Louis (1986) as part of a joint venture between Medicare Glaser (79 stores) and Sanus Corp. Health Systems.
• The company became a public trader in 1992.
• It services include home-delivery pharmacy services, drug-utilization review, and network-pharmacy claims processing, among many others.
• Also specializes in workers compensation prescription insurance as well as reinsurance.

#232: World Bird Sanctuary

Name pretty much says it all. It is a collection and preservance of birds of all kinds.

• The World Bird Sanctuary sits on 305 acres.
• Several endangered bird and wildlife species are featured here including eagles, owls, reptiles, parrots, the list goes on
• Despite its name, it is one of many bird sanctuaries, yet one of the largest, in the United States.
• Founded in 1977 by former St. Louis Zoo employee, ornithologist Walter C. Crawford, Jr.
• Special programs including scout badge programs and bird-watching tours can be scheduled with a naturalist, for a fee.
• Every Thursday evening in August there is a concert in the ampitheater part, which not only has a live band performing but features special birds flying out to the audience!

#228: Tower Grove Park

This is one of the cake locations that I skipped for no reason - other than that it was surrounded by other cakes and by the end of the day, yeah I forgot about Tower Grove! Nearly two months after I got the cakes at the MoBot Gardens and Jay International, I finally got this cake at one of St. Louis' iconic parks.

• Park was first authorized under state law in 1867, and opened in 1868.
• Most of the park was land donated by Henry Shaw, as a gift. 
• Once a month, there is 'Food Truck Friday' when some of the most popular local eateries sell their goods on the southern part of the park (sponsored by Sauce magazine)
• The park consists of activity areas such as children's wading pool, six corkball fields, ten softball fields and six soccer fields.
• Several pavilions and picnic sites also highlight Tower Grove Park, some having a unique theme and architectrue
• Carriage rides are also available as well, since the park committee has been about restoring the park's past. Reservations are required.  
• As expected, several special events are held here, along with weddings

#213: Centennial Greenway/KATY Trail

This is where two important trails in Missouri will come together. It is currently being planned that the Centennial Greenway will connect bikers/joggers/runners to the Katy Trail from most parts of St. Louis, including downtown!

Facts about the Centennial Greenway:

• Named for the 100th anniversary of the St. Louis World's Fair and the founding of University City.
• The trail will connect from Forest Park to Creve Coeur Memorial Park. 
• It is destined to be a 20-mile trail from St. Charles to St. Louis.
• Some parts of the trail have been completed, including the part that passes through Ruth Porter Park, and from this point (at the meeting of Katy Trail) to the St. Charles Heritage Museum.

The Katy Trail:

• Missouri's longest trail
• The country's longest 'rails-to-trails' path
• Edward 'Ted' Jones donated $2 million to the construction of this trail.
• Western terminus is located in Clinton, MO, and the eastern terminus is at the Edward 'Ted' and Pat Jones State Park. 
• Trails length is 237.7 miles, passing through such Missouri River towns and cities like Jefferson City, Hermann, Boonville, Columbia, and of course St. Charles.

***2015 Update***

The cake was purchased by the Cakelovers and its artist Mark Swain re-painted it. It is now the 'Saturday Morning Cartoon Cake', featuring several cartoon characters from the 1950's-on. On April 17, 2015, the cake was unveiled at R Space Gallery (in Soulard) and will be on display there until July 2015.

#190: Loretto-Hilton Theatre/ The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis

• Founded in 1966, renovated and expanded in 2002
• Also known as 'The Rep'
• More than 100 productions have been shown at the Rep, including Noises Off and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
• Takes pride in being one of the first 'regional theater' venues outside of New York

The Loretto-Hilton Theatre is where it is located.

#185: Carondelet Park

• St. Louis' third largest city park (after Forest and Fairground)
• Wikipedia says it was established in 1875, while the STL250 website says it was dedicated on July 4, 1876. This was to coincide with America's centennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
• Park consists of two lakes (Horseshoe and Boathouse), a gazebo (where Steve Davis, local Elvis Presley impersonator, performs) and a walking trail.
• A YMCA is also located there.
• Park is nearly 180 acres

#184: Feasting Fox

• Specializes in German cuisine, including and German sausage and apple strudel.
• Built in 1913 by the Anheuser-Busch company as the 'Gretchen Inn'
• Architecture was styled after Tudor Revival
• Eventually it was named 'Al Smith's' and was that way for a long time, up until 1987
• The building was vacant from 1987 to 1995
• Designated as a St. Louis landmark in 2001.

Not sure about this part, but I guess at one time it was a patio or entrance. Thought it looked cool :)

I usually get sick of saying this, but, I was NOT familiar with this place until this year for the cake hunt. My regret was not going in and eating at the time I took this cake, but I do want to go back and check it out. I do have German heritage (hence my last name!) so I gotta be loyal to my ancestry! My car was parked at Ted Drewes (2 doors down) so I didn't want to stay long in the area.

The Feasting Fox just happens to be located in St. Louis neighborhood Dutchtown. Dutchtown is also where Bevo Mill is located, and both of these places have a similar history as far as Anheuser-Busch and Prohibition. Those are pictures of the private-looking drive to Kingsland Court. It's got the unique symbol of Bevo Mill on top! (Notice the beer jug)

Mark Swain (who designed this cake and several more) spotlighted what made Dutchtown what it was. Among the places and organizations featured on the cake: (The Original) Crusoe's, Giuseppe's, Missouri Professional Cycling Series, Dad's Cookie Company, Merb's Candies, The Bluffs on Broadway, Urban Eats Cafe, Gus's Pretzels and the Grbic Restaurant. It also highlights the Cherokee-Lemp Historic District and the Meramec Virginia Business District.
